A University Born From a Real Problem
Every year, thousands of students leave the Northeast for a good degree. MIT University Sikkim was founded to reverse that flow.
Every year, thousands of students from Sikkim and the wider Northeast leave home to study elsewhere. They travel long distances, pay high living costs, and often never return to the region with their skills. Talented young people were being lost to geography.
The Founding Idea
The IMTS Foundation, with decades of experience in education and skill development, approached the Government of Sikkim with a simple proposal: build a full-fledged, statute-backed university in the hills that meets national standards, so that a student from Namchi does not have to move to Delhi or Bengaluru for a respected degree.
That proposal became Act No. 11 of 2024.
Sikkim teaches patience, discipline and respect for nature. These are not soft values — they are the foundation of good leadership. Our campus culture reflects them.
Education must reach the student who cannot afford to relocate, the first-generation learner, and the working professional. Our fee structure, domicile reservation and scholarship policy are all built around this belief.
A degree certificate alone no longer guarantees a career. Every graduate must leave with both a qualification and an employable skill — which is why internships, practical training and industry projects are built into every programme.
We reserve half of our non-teaching positions for local residents and welcome students from across India and abroad. Local roots, global standards.
"What starts here changes the world."
Every classroom, laboratory and library seat at MIT University Sikkim exists because someone believed that a student's postcode should never decide the ceiling of their ambition.
